DCRO are responsible for cave and mine rescue (apart from Coal Mines who are still the responsibility of Mines Rescue).
In a region which stretches from Derbyshire/Staffordshire across to Lincolnshire and down as far as Northants/Bedfordshire. The team have been in existence for 65 years and have come to the aid of over 400 people trapped or injured underground. Although, not all in the UK.
Made up of 100% volunteers (and mostly cavers), that are on call every hour, of every day, all year round.
Derbyshire Cave Rescue Organisation is funded through donations. Operating where other emergency services simply can not operate. They train regularly both on the surface and underground. Using specialist equipment to enable them to rescue anyone unfortunate enough to need assistance. Through the most demanding terrain, cavers like to call our playground.
Fancy Joining Them
They regularly recruit team members from active cavers.
The criteria are simple:
- Competent with personal progression using SRT
- Physically fit – to tackle most of Derbyshire’s cave and mine systems
- Be genuinely interested in becoming part of the team
It would help if you were known by one of the team members so that they can vouch for you. Otherwise, you would simply have to go out to attend a trip so that the members can assess that you are safe and competent. Once you’ve done this the training begins (see the DCRO website for details).
A great deal of their funding is spent on new or replacement equipment. As well as maintenance of the vehicle, the store and equipment. Also on the training programme. Moreover, less than 10 percent of the total spending on administration.
The DCRO has to raise funds through the efforts of its members. Additionally, revenue is raised by donations.
If you can help them out then please do. Even a small amount is appreciated! You can make a one-off donation or set up regular payments by clicking on this link.
